in the PC and the SAS System is optimized for its presence.
Microsoft Windows provides floating point emulation software
with decreased performance in the absence of a floating point
unit or math coprocessor.
Memory Requirements 32MB minimum, more for improved performance. For Base
SAS software, 32 MB of swapfile space is required. For other
components, particularly SAS/EIS, 96 or more MB of swapfile
space is required.
WINDOWS NT Server: 64 MB minimum and 64 MB minimum of
swapfile space
File System Recommendations
The use of file systems supporting long filenames is
recommended For Windows NT, NTFS is recommended
Network Installations
Long filenames support is recommended on any Windows NT server
or Novell server where a server installation is performed
Online Help Browser
To view the online help within the SAS System, either Internet
Explorer, Version 5 or Netscape Navigator, version 4.07 is
required. Later versions of either of these Web browsers
should also be usable.
Make sure all other Windows applications are closed!!
Insert the SAS 8.1 CD-ROM labeled "Disk 1" into
the source drive. If the AutoPlay feature is enabled,
the Installation Wizard will start.
If it does not start automatically, click Start on
the Task Bar and then Run. Enter
[source drive]:\SETUP
Click on SAS System Setup and follow the
installation instructions on the screen.
NOTE: If during the installation process, you get

Types of Installation Configurations
Complete Personal Installation
Custom Personal Installation
Client Installation
Complete File Server Installation
Custom File Server Installation
Performing a Complete Personal Installation
Select this option if you want to install all of the
components on the SAS System CD, but do not need the Help
files, Sample files, or Test programs. This option is not
recommended for single users because by default almost all
of the SAS modules available are installed.
Performing a Custom Personal Installation **
(Recommended for single users)**
When the Custom Installation component listbox is
displayed, select only the components that you want to
install. The Core and Base modules are
required and for statistical analysis select the STAT
module.
For instructions of the other three types of
installations available (Client Installation, Complete File
Server Installation and Custom File Server Installation)
refer to the Installation Instructions section of the SAS
CD-ROM .
!!!VERY IMPORTANT!!!
Toward the end of the installation the following sets of messages will
appear:Setup is ready to update your licensing information.
Update license (setinit) information? [recommended]Select NO.There appears to be a problem with your setinit.sas file!
Would you like to correct the file now?Select NO.Licensing process has been terminated by the user.Select OK.
Proceed with the additional installations options.
If the SAS Setup program determines that additional
installation options are available, windows for the additional
installation options will be displayed. After all of the SAS
System files have been copied, each of these installation
options will launch another setup program. Once these
external setup programs are finished, you will be returned to
SAS System Setup.
Installing the SAS Viewer
When installing Base SAS software on Windows 95, Setup will
prompt you to install the SAS System Viewer. The application
lets you view the contents of SAS data set and catalog files
without using the SAS System or requiring the SAS System to be
installed on your machine. You are free to distribute this
program to allow other people to view your SAS data.
Installing 16 bit and 32 bit ODBC Drivers
The SAS ODBC Driver allows you to access, update, and
manipulate SAS data from your favorite ODBC-compliant
applications, such as Microsoft Access, Microsoft Excel,
Visual Basic, and PowerBuilder. The SAS ODBC Driver provides
read access to databases such as IBM DB2 and ORACLE via SAS/ACCESS
software running on remote SAS servers. Further, SAS views
can be defined to join database tables from different vendors,
creating a virtual data warehouse for your ODBC-enabled
applications.
You should install either the 16 or 32 bit version of the
SAS ODBC Driver depending on the version of Windows you are
running, and whether your ODBC applications are 16 or 32 bit.
On Windows 95 you can install both the 16 and 32 bit
drivers depending on your application needs. 16 bit
applications can use both 16 and 32 bit drivers and hence can
see data sources defined by each type of driver. 32 bit
applications can only use 32 bit drivers and therefore can
only see data sources defined to the 32 bit drivers. This
occurs because Windows 95 allows thunking (16 to 32 bit
translation) from 16 to 32 bit applications but not from 32 to
16 bit applications. The ODBC Driver Manager handles all
thunking issues.
